The Motor Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, servicing, repairing, and maintaining petrol-powered vehicles and their mechanical systems. The position involves conducting fault diagnosis, carrying out repairs and scheduled maintenance, testing vehicle performance, and ensuring all work is completed in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry standards. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining customer satisfaction by delivering efficient, accurate, and high-quality automotive services.

Task & responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain, test, and repair petrol engines and associated mechanical systems, including transmissions, steering, suspension, and braking components.
  • Identify mechanical faults and performance issues using diagnostic procedures, testing equipment, and computerised diagnostic systems.
  • Dismantle and inspect engines, gearboxes, steering assemblies, and other vehicle components to determine repair requirements.
  • Repair, service, and replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts while following manufacturer guidelines and technical specifications.
  • Perform scheduled vehicle servicing, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, engine tuning, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Reassemble engines and mechanical systems following repairs and ensure all components are fitted correctly and securely.
  • Conduct post-repair testing, adjustments, and performance checks to verify the safe and effective operation of vehicles.
  • Utilise diagnostic software and electronic testing equipment to assess vehicle systems and identify faults accurately.
  • Maintain detailed service records, repair documentation, and workshop reports as required.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with workplace health and safety requirements and industry standards.
  • Assist with vehicle inspections and provide recommendations regarding repairs, maintenance requirements, and roadworthiness where applicable.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and safe workshop environment.

Qualification & experience

  • A relevant qualification in Automotive Mechanical Technology or a related trade qualification.
  • 1–3 years of relevant experience as a Motor Mechanic.
  • Strong knowledge of vehicle diagnostics, repairs, servicing, and maintenance procedures.
  • Experience using modern diagnostic equipment and workshop tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and repair documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
  • Relevant licensing or registration where required under applicable legislation.
