The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking a Director, Criminal Law to provide a critical role within Justice Systems Coordination and Regulation.

About the Business Unit

Justice Systems Coordination and Regulation (JSCR) group supports the Attorney-General and DJCS Ministers to deliver court services policy, and civil and criminal law, responsibilities by providing legal, policy and stakeholder management expertise. We work collaboratively with key entities across the justice system and the department to ensure policy reform is strategic, relevant, holistic and people centred.

JSCR supports independent legal entities across the DJCS portfolio including Victoria Legal Aid, the Law Institute of Victoria, the Office of Public Prosecutions, Courts Services Victoria, VCAT, the Coronial Council of Victoria, the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, and the Magistrates, Coroners, County, Supreme, and Children's Courts.

About the Role

The Director is a leader of the Criminal Law business unit. The role provides expert, specialist advice on criminal law matters and the development of policy and legislation. It is responsible for the day to day leadership and management of the business unit, including fostering career pathways and team member development. The Director is also responsible for leading the delivery of key policy and organisational projects.

Some of your duties will include:

• Lead and manage the Criminal Law business unit effectively, including fostering career pathways and development of all team members.
• Lead strategy, business planning and implementation to ensure delivery against all accountabilities.
• Develop evidence based and solutions-oriented advice and briefings to the Attorney-General and government on a wide range of criminal law matters and deliver the Attorney-General's criminal law legislative agenda.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Extensive leadership and management experience, demonstrated at an executive level, with a proven ability to motivate a high performing team, provide constructive feedback to enrich development, and to nurture a positive working environment.
• Highly developed conceptual and analytical skills and a proven ability to provide authoritative advice on complex social policy matters. Professional experience working within the criminal justice policy area would be of great advantage.
• Senior stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to lead and deliver technically complex legislative projects.
• A proven ability to work in a sustained way and deliver results under pressure.
• Proven communication skills, including strategic writing for influence, relationship management and negotiation skills at a senior level.
• Ability to undertake and manage a range of short and longer term policy planning and implementation projects, and deliver timely and high quality outcomes.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. law).
