Due to continued business growth and an increasing number of technically complex restoration projects, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Restoration Agricultural Scientist to join our team in the Greater Brisbane Area.

The Restoration Agricultural Scientist team member will collaborate with a skilled field team to restore and maintain vital high-biodiversity areas in South-East Queensland. They will play a crucial role in reversing land degradation by restoring soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem function with their knowledge of plant science and ecology. The individual will be expected to leverage their knowledge of plant science and ecology to rehabilitate damaged landscapes, managing everything from invasive species to restoring native bushlands.

Task & responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and oversee Vegetation Management Programs (VMP) and Integrated Weed Management Programs (IWMP) for ecological restoration and land rehabilitation projects.
  • Conduct soil health assessments, including analysis of nutrient profiles, soil structure, compaction, pH and restoration requirements.
  • Develop scientifically based revegetation and rehabilitation strategies considering soil-plant relationships, climate conditions, regional ecosystems and site-specific environmental factors.
  • Monitor restoration performance through environmental data collection systems, vegetation monitoring, biodiversity assessments and soil condition analysis.
  • Utilise environmental technologies including GPS mapping, drone photo referencing and monitoring transects to evaluate restoration outcomes.
  • Provide technical guidance to operational teams regarding vegetation management, weed control, soil rehabilitation and sustainable land management practices.
  • Develop and deliver technical training programs relating to plant identification, revegetation techniques, soil health, pest management and weed control methodologies.
  • Prepare technical reports, management recommendations and project documentation for stakeholders, clients and regulatory purposes. 
  • Oversee field operations to ensure works are completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with environmental standards, project specifications and WHS requirements.
  • Liaise with government agencies, landowners and project stakeholders regarding rehabilitation strategies, environmental compliance obligations and revegetation planning.
  • Assist with project planning, budgeting and resource allocation for restoration and rehabilitation projects.

Qualification & experience

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or higher qualification in Agricultural Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Land conservation and management or a closely related discipline. 
  • Demonstrated experience in agricultural science, land rehabilitation, revegetation, environmental restoration or sustainable land management. 
  • Strong knowledge of soil systems, plant nutrition, revegetation methodologies and integrated weed management practices. 
  • Ability to interpret scientific and environmental data and apply findings to practical field outcomes. 
  • Experience preparing technical reports, management recommendations and environmental documentation.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills. 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within field-based operational environments.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience supervising or coordinating field-based operational teams. 
  • Knowledge of vegetation management and restoration practices relevant to South-East Queensland. 
  • Experience using environmental technologies such as GPS mapping, drone photo referencing or environmental monitoring systems. 
  • Knowledge of herbicide application and weed management methodologies and techniques.  
  • Experience working on ecological restoration, offset or large-scale rehabilitation projects.
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance requirements and WHS obligations within environmental or agricultural projects. 
  • Field-based project experience within agricultural, environmental or rural settings.
