The Electrical Engineering Technician plays a critical technical role within the operational team, supporting the planning, installation, operation, monitoring and maintenance of electrical and control systems associated with Microtunnel Boring Machine (MTBM) operations.

The position focuses on ensuring that all electrical, instrumentation and control systems operate efficiently, safely and in accordance with project specifications, while providing technical support to engineers and project teams throughout all stages of MTBM works. This role combines hands-on technical work with analytical responsibilities, including system monitoring, fault finding, performance testing and compliance reporting.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in the installation, assembly, calibration and commissioning of electrical systems and control equipment associated with MTBM operations, including power supply systems, PLC controls and instrumentation.
  • Support Electrical Engineers and Supervisors in the design, layout and configuration of electrical systems, including cabling, control panels, guidance systems and monitoring devices.
  • Conduct testing, diagnostics and performance monitoring of electrical systems, including analysing operational data and identifying faults or inefficiencies in MTBM equipment.
  • Collect, interpret and record technical data, including machine performance, alignment readings, system pressures and electrical outputs, and prepare reports, charts and system logs for project and engineering review.
  • Carry out routine inspection, maintenance, calibration and repair of electrical and control systems, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist in fault finding and troubleshooting of PLC systems, instrumentation and electrical components affecting MTBM operations.
  • Monitor and verify system performance including line, grade, and guidance systems, ensuring outputs remain within project tolerances and specifications.
  • Liaise with engineering and project teams to ensure electrical systems meet design specifications, safety standards and operational requirements.
  • Assist in estimating materials, components and maintenance requirements, including monitoring consumables and system wear.
  • Support commissioning and decommissioning processes, ensuring all electrical systems are installed, tested and documented correctly.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including inspection records, test results, commissioning data and maintenance logs in accordance with company procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant Australian Standards, site safety systems and quality assurance requirements.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Relevant Diploma qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Demonstrated min of 1 year experience working with industrial electrical systems, control systems, or heavy mechanical/electrical plant.
  • Practical knowledge of PLC systems, electrical control systems and instrumentation.
  • Experience conducting testing, calibration and fault finding on electrical or automated systems.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings, technical specifications and electrical schematics.
  • Experience interpreting technical data, system outputs and performance reports.
  • Exposure to MTBM, tunnelling systems or large infrastructure projects is advantageous, but not essential.
  • Basic understanding of engineering principles, system performance and safety compliance requirements.
