WAMEC Pty Ltd is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineering Technician to support our engineering team with testing, installation, maintenance, inspection and technical analysis of mechanical systems and equipment. The successful candidate will work closely with our Superintendent Engineer and Senior Service Engineers to support WAMEC’s marine and industrial engineering operations, performing technical testing, diagnostics, installation, repair and maintenance duties.

Task & responsibilities

  •  Conducting inspections, diagnostic checks and performance tests on marine diesel engines, mechanical systems, pumps, turbochargers, fuel injection systems and related plant equipment. 
  •  Collecting, recording and analysing mechanical test data, measurements, alignment readings, operating pressures, temperatures, vibration results and equipment performance information. 
  •  Assisting with the repair, overhaul, servicing and optimisation of diesel engines, pump systems, turbochargers, fuel injection components and other mechanical assemblies. 
  •  Assembling, installing, adjusting and modifying mechanical components, machine parts, engine assemblies, pump units, hydraulic systems, controls and related equipment in workshop and site environments. 
  •  Supporting precision laser alignment activities to ensure rotating equipment, shafts, couplings, pumps, motors and marine mechanical systems operate safely and efficiently. 
  •  Reading and interpreting technical drawings, engine manuals, service specifications, mechanical diagrams and manufacturer instructions to complete repair and maintenance tasks. 
  •  Selecting appropriate tools, equipment, replacement parts, materials and testing instruments required for mechanical repairs, maintenance, overhauls and installations. 
  •  Estimating materials, parts, labour requirements and equipment needs for repair, service, overhaul and maintenance jobs. 
  •  Assisting with procurement of specialised parts, components and equipment by identifying technical specifications, part numbers and suitability for marine and industrial applications. 
  •  Troubleshooting mechanical faults and assisting in identifying root causes of equipment failure, wear, misalignment, vibration, pressure loss or poor mechanical performance. 
  •  Carrying out and assisting with field and workshop testing of mechanical assemblies after repair, installation or overhaul to confirm compliance with specifications and operational requirements. 
  •  Preparing technical notes, service records, inspection reports, test results, job cards and maintenance documentation for completed work. 
  •  Supporting preventative maintenance, breakdown repairs and scheduled servicing of marine and industrial mechanical equipment. 
  •  Ensuring completed mechanical work is within manufacturer specifications, engineering requirements, safety standards, quality procedures and client requirements. 
  •  Maintaining safe work practices in accordance with workplace health and safety procedures, marine worksite requirements and company standards.

Qualification & experience

  • A relevant qualification such as Certificate III/IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Trade, or a closely related field. 
  • At least 3-4 years of relevant experience in mechanical assembly, mechanical testing, plant maintenance, installation or engineering support. 
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, technical diagrams and equipment manuals. 
  • Experience with mechanical systems, machine components, hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, motors, conveyors or similar equipment. 
  • Ability to collect and analyse technical data and prepare clear reports. 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail. 
  • Understanding of workplace health and safety requirements. 
  • Ability to work both independently and under the direction of Mechanical Engineers or senior technical staff. 

Desirable Skills

  •  Experience with major marine diesel engine brands including Bergen, MAN, Wärtsilä, Caterpillar, Cummins and Volvo Penta.
  •  Hands-on experience with precision laser alignment of rotating equipment and gearboxes.
  •  Knowledge of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), hardness testing and surface roughness (RA) measurement.
  •  Experience in turbocharger servicing, fuel injection system repair, calibration and testing (test bench experience advantageous).
  •  Prior work in offshore, marine or resources sector mechanical maintenance, preferably on vessels in full operation or dry dock.
  •  Relevant trade background (e.g. Heavy Diesel Fitter or Mechanical Fitter) with strong diagnostic, reporting and documentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel for site work across remote WA, NT and interstate locations as required.
  • Current or ability to obtain MSIC (Maritime Security Identification Card) highly regarded.
