About The Position

This position is responsible for the design and development of new or enhanced products, from point of assignment through to point of handover of design responsibility, and provide assistance to QA department for product test requirements and part evaluation.

This role reports to Manager – Product Development, AU

Tasks and Responsibilities

Product Development:

Development of new products and line extensions from concept to production release

  • Develop innovative concepts that perform to established objectives.
  • Create detail cad models for concept evaluation.
  • Organise the manufacture of prototypes.
  • Assess prototypes .
  • Create detail drawings and cad models for tool creation.
  • Assess, test and evaluate OTS submissions and product test results. Including test setup, metrology and test rig design.
  • Identify relevant design verification and test requirements and ensure that these are performed at the appropriate development stage.
  • Assist in the development of appropriate manufacturing processes to support the manufacture of the new products
  • Work with assigned project manager in order to meet pre-agreed timeframes.
  • Work within the Allegion new product introduction procedures and carry out work assigned by them to the design engineer.
  • Identify costs or savings within the assigned engineering projects. Liaise with suppliers to quote on tooling and production.
  • Identify Patent possibility and work towards Allegion gaining intellectual advantage where commercially viable. Work with Product Management or any other entity required in order to establish to product scope.
  • Liaise suppliers and key stakeholders to ensure a robust and manufacturable product design.
  • Author or help author any design requirements/specifications in order that external contractors/suppliers can carry out design work

Financial:

  • Maintain a pragmatic approach to projects to ensure a level of commercial reality and practicality is applied to decisions
  • Monitor expenses, budgeting as required

Customer:

  • Maintain awareness of leading-edge trends in new products/services to understand potential opportunities for keeping the Allegion business on the cutting edge of quality and innovation
  • Liaise with external internal & customers, suppliers and industry partners as required

Operational:

  • Ensure any role responsibilities or processes associated with Allegion are delivered to ensure achievement of stabilised processes and predictable outcomes.

People:

  • Lead, coach, develop and motivate team members utilising the appropriate Allegion tools and resources, to ensure a high level of performance, delivery and engagement
  • Ensure you and your team (if relevant) understand and behave in alignment with the cultural pillars and social contract

Safety:

  • Ensure all reasonably practicable steps are undertaken to provide a safe and healthy workplace through an understanding of the hazards and risks associated with the workplace (wherever that maybe).
  • Conduct regular hazard and risk assessments of their workplace.
  • Ensure updated knowledge of relevant WHS Acts, Regulations and Codes of Practice.
  • Ensure all workers, including contractors, are adequately trained and supervised to meet job requirements.
  • Ensure workers, including new and young workers have the prescribed qualifications or experience or that they work under the supervision of a person who has the prescribed qualifications and experience.
  • Ensure all workers are aware of their role in creating and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.

Additional Duties:

  • Carry out additional activities as directed from time to time by the Manager of this position

Qualifications/Experience Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Industrial, Mechanical or Manufacturing technology) or equivalent level of expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in product and mechanism design area of manufacturing/engineering.
  • Experience working with design/engineering of intricate mechanisms & manufacturing
  • Knowledge of zinc diecasting, pressed metal, plastic injection molding and various finishing processes
  • Experience working effectively with design and engineering teams
  • Implementation and management of product design improvements
  • Creation and management of design control lists
  • Experience in delivering projects from conception to production
  • Experience with managing overseas manufacturers and supplier
  • Demonstrated ability to complete detailed tolerance checking (GD&T)
  • Creation and management of component and assembly drawings
  • Proficient in SolidWorks with minimum 10 years’ experience
  • Development of new products / product concepts
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
  • MS Office skills - Excel, PowerPoint, Word

  • Manufacturing systems and processes: Awareness of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximising the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

  • Position works collaboratively with multiple functions & business units including API Access & Security, engineering, sourcing, marketing, and sales in ANZ and throughout the Allegion organisation as required
